Flutter of Memories

A flutter of fidgeting memories
emerge like my sparrows that migrate
then return to branches, their home
next to ship’s bell outside west window
~
At dusk, remembered scenes crash
against each other, stretch peace
of mind beyond bearing…the bell
sounds dull ring, is it autumn’s chill
wind or still the captain’s slinking ghost?
I pray, and the sparrows come
my soul rests ~

Remembered Whispers

Always, I remember
whispers behind walls
house had history, life
of its own, but I would
have little chance
to learn the mystery
though each night I
pushed my ear tighter
against cool paint
yearning for clear
word or two
I had to depend
on the whispers
a distraction
rhythmic comfort
for I feared the tall
man who sometimes
visited my room
how strange he was
and too, his name
I remember whispers
the rough husky
sound of his voice:
“it is only I, little one
‘Legacy'”
Did I merely dream
or imagine him?
I don’t believe so
fragrance of pipe
lingered in mornings
and bits of tobacco
scattered by my bed ~

One-Liner Wednesday ~ Ideas: Check for the Seal

“I often think I have brilliant ideas…but unless they arrive sealed by God’s own hand, they usually nosedive.”

Welcome Visitor
Another messenger angel
I heard the cry before I
saw him, seagull on roof
outside my window
since Covid, many birds
are not seen as often, close
grateful, I know he is a
‘sent one’ by the Lord Who
favors us on ordinary days
with His extraordinary
Presence, constant love
and grace indescribable
seagull’s cry is not always
mournful, today a joyful
greeting, reassurance ~

Happy Tiger, Kitchen Dance
A blue-sky perfect day
cooking apples at the stove
listening to sound of Hispanic
workmen’s hammers next door
and their salsa music playing
like the score of a movie I
don’t have to watch to enjoy
hips and feet moving
(a kitchen dance), I stir
cinnamon sugar in fragrant pot
I’ve forgotten what little Spanish
I learned at school…no matter
heart can keep lively beat, it
feels like a happy tiger inside
me, who chased away shadows
the men have no idea they’re
a blessing sent by God to lift
spirit of heaviness within
today I will not fear sunset, I’ll
welcome twilight, relish midnight ~
